Punjab govt strikes SC difficult Centre’s choice to increase BSF’s territorial jurisdiction

The Punjab authorities has moved the Supreme Courtroom difficult the Centre’s choice that expanded the BSF’s jurisdiction to undertake search, seizure and arrest inside a bigger 50-km stretch from the worldwide border in Assam, West Bengal and Punjab, as in comparison with the sooner 15 km. The Union house ministry had issued a notification on this context on October 11, amending a July, 2014 enabling provision for the BSF personnel and officers whereas they function within the border areas.

Whereas in Punjab, West Bengal and Assam, the BSF jurisdiction was enhanced from 15 km to 50 km, in Gujarat, which shares its border with Pakistan, the restrict has been diminished from 80 km to 50 km, whereas in Rajasthan, it has been stored unchanged at 50 km.

The problem courted controversy as Opposition-ruled Punjab and West Bengal denounced the transfer and the respective state assemblies moved resolutions towards this choice of the Union authorities.

The BSF has a power of about 2.65 lakh personnel and it was raised on December 1, 1965.

It has 192 operational battalions and is the nation’s largest border-guarding drive, with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and the Assam Rifles being the opposite three.
